Creating a personal philosophy on managing stress is a critical component of our wellness plans. Stress is used in the natural world to create growth and movement, but just like an engine, if the stress does not have an outlet it compromises the entire system. Many chronic diseases are simply manifestations of chronically high levels of stress stored in your body. For a health plan to be truly complete, you must have active strategies towards your long term sustainability. At PRISM, we use the Language of Breath.
In a world that constantly demands our attention and energy, the act of breathing is often taken for granted. However, breath is more than a mere physiological process; it is a profound tool that bridges the conscious and unconscious aspects of our being. The Language of Breath philosophy, the program I am certified to teach, delves deeply into the transformative power of breathwork, emphasizing its role in fostering self-awareness and holistic well-being. Breathwork acts as a mediator between our minds and our bodies, allowing us to access and influence the unconscious, thereby promoting a state of holistic awareness and balance. By consciously controlling our breath, we can explore the depths of our psyche, uncover suppressed emotions, and gain insights into our true selves. This practice fosters a profound connection with our inner being, leading to enhanced self-awareness and personal growth.
One of the most immediate benefits of breathwork is its ability to reduce stress and regulate emotions. In today's fast-paced world, chronic stress has become a pervasive issue, contributing to various physical and mental health problems. The Language of Breath philosophy teaches techniques that activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the harmful effects of stress. By mastering these techniques, individuals can achieve a state of calm and emotional equilibrium, without having to withdraw from life. Breathwork directly influences the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, stress response, pain management, cellular healing, etc. Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing and coherent breathing have been shown to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the ANS. Research by Jerath et al. (2015) indicates that slow, deep breathing can enhance parasympathetic activity, reducing stress and promoting a state of relaxation .
I have personally been transformed by implementing The Language of Breath philosophy into my life. It offers a holistic approach to breathwork, emphasizing its role in bridging the conscious and unconscious self, reducing stress, and enhancing self-awareness. This self awareness is your most powerful tool for knowing how to train smart and live well. And by being able to consciously influence your breathing patterns, you will have a scientifically proven tool to deal with stress, reduce (or in my case, ELIMINATE) anxiety, and choose the best action.
